Sour Diesel strain information

While the breeders that created Sour Diesel have never come into the spotlight, the strain itself is about as famous as they come. This heavily Sativa-dominant strain took centre stage in the early 90s and quickly cemented herself as a true OG in the weed world. Some claim she hails from NYC, while most agree she's a Cali native. Either way, this cross between Chemdawg 91 and Super Skunk is one of the most grown strains of the past 35 years, and for good reason.

Securing second place at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1994 was what really put her on the map. Her complex, unusual (for the time) aroma and flavour profile was highlighted by judges as one of her standout features, and with a THC content ranging from 20% to 24%, she was up there with the potent options of the early 90s.

Today, she stands tall as a strain that every self-respecting grower simply has to have in their collection.

Are Sour Diesel seeds easy to grow?

Yes, with a basic level of knowledge and a little extra effort, even beginner growers can try their hand at cultivating this iconic strain.

She is suited to both indoor and outdoor growing, but the Sativa genetics must be taken into account, as Sour Diesel can easily reach two meters tall when left to her own devices. Great for outdoor growers with heaps of space and no legality issues, but those in the city might struggle.

This is where the "extra effort" (if you can even call it that) comes in handy. This beast of a strain can handle abuse but the bucket full, so you can really go full force with the plant training. We like to top our Sour Diesel plants two or three times (depending on the veg time), and then run her through a ScrOG net to keep the entire canopy at an even height. This will also help increase yields by encouraging the plant to produce more lateral branches and flowering sites through a more even light spread and better canopy air exchange.

Sour Diesel demands patience as its flowering period extends to 10 to 11 weeks, but when you get the job done right, expect to pull more than two pounds per plant (outdoors) or up to 600 grams per square meter (indoors).

Preferred climate

Sour Diesel's Sativa dominant genetics hail from tropical or subtropical climates. This means you will want to try to recreate these conditions in order to achieve the best results when growing her.

An outdoor grow in a warm, slightly humid and very sunny climate with plenty of light is ideal, but if you're growing indoors, make sure your set-up mimics this as closely as possible.

Minimum temps of 70°F / 21°C are ideal, while max temp should not exceed 85°F / 30°C. Humidity-wise, start her out at around the 65% mark, then 55% for veg, and below 50% once the flowers really start to pump out.

What is Sour Diesel good for?

In terms of the potential medical or therapeutic effects that Sour Diesel offers, she is mostly geared towards improving mood through stress and depression relief, while also helping to combat fatigue and chronic pain.

However, with her high THC content and strong Sativa genetics, be a little careful if you are battling through an anxious period, as this strain can sometimes exacerbate symptoms. It is best to start slow and build up your dosage as needed to find the perfect balance for your unique situation.

How much can Sour Diesel yield?

Sour Diesel can yield around 500-600 grams per square meter indoors, or up to 1 kg per plant when grown outside.

Durban Poison flowering time
